Open Source, Open Source, Open Source
If you couldn’t tell by the title, Open Source is something we consider very important. This can also be seen by the fact that our company website is a WordPress website.
As far as using open source as a tool to help secure a job, it is a great way to get experience, it shows that you are passionate about your work, and it is a great way to give back. If you do not have working experience you can use your open source project experience on your resume. Showing that you are taking part in open source projects and are not being paid for the work demonstrates that you enjoy what you do. These projects provide a way to give back while doing something you love. Open source is also a great way to keep your skills sharp and practice your skill.
GitHub is the largest open source community with millions of repositories and is a great way to collaborate with other engineers and developers. You can also create a profile on GitHub that some potential employers will ask to review during the interviewing process.
How do you get started?
First you will want to find open source projects that fit your interests as well as your skill level. Often times you will be able to download the code to make sure that the project is a good fit for you. Once you have found the perfect project you will need to contact the owner of the project and let them know that you are interested in the project. To enhance the chances of the owner approving you for the project you may want to try making a change or fixing a bug and then send the change or fix along with your email to the owner. This will prove your interest and let the administrator know that you can really contribute to their project.
There are many open source projects out there that could use the help of good engineers, so get out there and join one today.
